Lee County Sheriff and staff meet with island organization heads to discuss employment of person on sex offender list

The explanation is this: Currently Lee County looks at the entire grounds of the Boca Grande Community Center as a “park.” A park has more restrictions than a school, in the fact that a sex offender can be at a school with proper supervision, and with good reason to be there (and prior approval). A sex offender cannot be at a “park” in Lee County while children are present.

History Bytes continues with the always-lively Futch family tales

It started when she had first moved to the Englewood Beach area from the bright lights of Detroit. She was not smitten with the area, but when she met a young man flagging down a car to get him from Venice to Boca Grande, smitten she was. She told him – Mark Futch – she could only take him to Englewood Beach, but ended up driving him all the way to his intended destination. That was in February of 1975. They were married in May. “I was swept off my feet,” she admits.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Question arises from a reader – What’s going on with that bridge?

To the Editor: Several years ago, The Gasparilla Inn rebuilt the bridge that traversed the Boca Grande bayou and the golf club. At that time a “temporary” metal bridge was put in place for passage. This “temporary” bridge is much lower than the old or new bridge, thus making it impossible for boats, kayaks, paddleboards, […]

Milne rocked the Fust with blues, boogie woogie and more

The Library of Congress has deemed him a “national treasure.” He has the ability to hear and comprehend four symphonies in his head at one time. His talent is unfathomable to most people and touches all realms of music, from classical to bluegrass to ragtime to blues. You could tell, though, from his half-closed eyes and rapt expression that ragtime is his true love, as is entertaining an audience. And there was certainly no shortage of entertained audience members at Tuesday night’s performance.

It’s been awhile since the kayak launch was usable, soooo … what’s up with that?

But the question still remains – whose job is it to put the kayak launch back to rights? After all, it is an official stop on the Blueways Trail, which is a interconnected statewide map and information system that gives kayakers access to where some of the best waterways are located along 220 miles of coastline. It includes tidal creeks, estuary bays and, in this area, Charlotte Harbor.
