Live Poets of Boca Grande invite you to attend ‘Poetry in the Garden’

The Johann Fust Library Foundation will present “Poetry in the Garden” next week, featuring original work by the Live Poets of Boca Grande. The poets will read a collection of their original haiku and other works. This year’s event will be enhanced by the soothing music of Julie F. Cornwall on the cello.

Bob Fletcher and his secret to longevity 

After the passing of his parents, Robert (Bob) Fletcher, 91, took over the family’s small piano and organ business in the 1970s – back when mall king Edward DeBartolo Sr. was bringing his indoor shopping centers to Florida. Bob opened Fletcher Music as a general music store in Florida’s first mall and quickly focused on selling organs to the retirees of St. Petersburg. That became his business model. If there was a mall, there was bound to be a Fletcher Music store – 42 of them, in fact – in Florida, Arizona, Nevada and the Carolinas.

Hours for the sale on Monday, April 17, and Tuesday, April 18 are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. During the first two days of the sale, hardcover books, CDs & audiobooks are just $3. Or you can bundle and save – get four items for $10.  Paperback books are $2 each or bundle six paperback books for $10.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT: STATIONS OF THE CROSS

The procession begins at Our Lady of Mercy church at noon, and takes about an hour. Each participant receives a booklet that contains the readings and prayers. Fr. Jerome Carosella, pastor of Our Lady of Mercy, said this booklet has been used since the ritual procession began on the island in 1986, a couple of years before he arrived on the island.

Over the past week, the red tide organism Karenia brevis was detected in 75 samples collected from Florida’s Gulf Coast.
