LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Boca Grande Preschool – Putting children first

To the Editor:The Boca Grande Preschool is a little jewel on our island where caring adults compassionately embrace the Island’s children. It is a place where the young working families of Boca Grande can leave their children with the peace of mind that they are in a nurturing environment focused on meeting the students’ developmental […]

Boca Grande wildlife needs you!

Never has there been a time when wildlife rescue volunteers were needed more on Gasparilla Island. To say there is a dire lack of people willing to pick up and drive injured or ill wildlife to local rehabilitation centers is an understatement – in fact, there are virtually none. From 2005, Blanche, co-owner of The […]

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Boca Grande – a charming place made even more charming by its honest, kind people

To the Editor:
Two weeks ago, our family had a wonderful vacation in Boca Grande. It was our third visit to the island and we had rented a hundred plus-year-old cottage on Tarpon Ave. We love what a step back in time this charming town portrays. No chain stores, no high rises, no litter, no graffiti, a fabulous bike path and walking path, very little vehicular traffic, beautiful beaches, and a warm, friendly, welcoming attitude that is hard to find. Everyone is so outdoorsy and active. It is obvious the residents take great pride in their property and are grateful to live in such a special place.

Join in the fun at the Boca Grande 5K walk and run

On Sunday, Feb. 20 at 7:30 a.m. sharp, join us for an island run through historic Boca Grande.
Start your run at the Boca Grande Community Center (on the National Register of Historic Places), pass beautiful views of Charlotte Harbor and the famous Gasparilla Inn, go along scenic Gilchrist Avenue (lined with palm trees) and finish on Banyan Street (named for the very large trees that line both sides of the street).

ROLLING! The Boca Grande Film Festival has begun

While it was a rainy night for the opening party of the Boca Grande Film Festival, the people who gathered in the Boca Grande Community Center Woman’s Club Room were warm and sheltered from the elements, as they celebrated the announcement of films. This event was virtual last year, so this was a welcome gathering.
Sponsored by the Boca Beacon and Friends of the Boca Grande Community Center, this event includes special guests from some of the films. Many of these have been viewed at well-known festivals such as Sundance and each one was hand-picked for the event.
Here is your line-up of films and schedule for the 2022 Boca Grande Film Festival:

The Boca Grande Garden Club to dig in the dirt with Barbara Robinson

Barbara Paul Robinson’s life includes a lot of “firsts.” She was the first woman to make partner at the legendary Debevoise & Plimpton law firm, she was the first woman president of the NYC Bar Association. Indeed, she was unsurprisingly an early second-wave feminist, launching Debevoise’s flextime program for child-rearing attorneys in 1967, another NYC first.

For the love of books: Boca Grande has its own free little lending library

All across America, mini libraries have been popping up in front of homes, schools, businesses. The “give one, take one” book exchanges are as ubiquitous as a Starbucks in Seattle.
It’s no surprise that the lovely trend has hit the streets of Boca Grande. If you’re walking past the Pink Pony or in the courtyard next to Tortuga’s, you will see an adorable replica of a cedar cabinet filled with books.

A year of acknowledgment and celebration planned for Boca Grande Health Clinic

From our earliest days working out of a small room above the Railroad Depot, the Boca Grande Health Clinic set out to provide personal, compassionate care. 2022 marks an important milestone as we celebrate 75 years providing medical care to year-round and seasonal residents, vacation homeowners and employees, in our beautiful island paradise. In tribute […]
