GIBA reports historic number of vehicles over bridge in March

At its spring quarterly meeting Thursday, May 5 the Gasparilla Island Bridge Authority had some interesting news about the traffic flow in recent days, particularly about two days this past March. GIBA Executive Director Kathy Banson-Verrico gave a report on the traffic passing through the toll booths during the first six months of the fiscal year. She reported that traffic numbers were up. Cash tolls were about 13 percent above the same time last fiscal year. Customer service tolls, or bridge passes, were up by about 10 percent, and overall traffic was up eight percent. She said this represented about 47,000 more vehicles than the number from the same period last year. 

2022 Southwest Florida Climate Summit to be held April 7 and 8

Southwest Florida: The Coastal & Heartland National Estuary Partnership (CHNEP) is excited to host the 2022 Southwest Florida Climate Summit. This public event will be held on April 7th and 8 from 9 am to 4:30 pm, with both virtual and in-person participation options. The Summit will feature experts with interactive audience question and answer sessions, to exchange ideas on expanding the region’s capacity to respond to climate challenges and to build climate resilience in our communities.

Carlton Ward to talk about Florida’s ‘big cats’ at presentation on March 29

Ward is a conservation photographer and National Geographic Explorer who is on a mission to inspire appreciation of, and protection for, Florida’s original nature and culture. This has been a driving force in his life for years, but it has become his primary focus since 2016, supported by grants from the National Geographic Society and other partners. He has personally traversed the path of the panther on foot, by boat, by kayak and by various other means of transportation to see and photograph first-hand the panther’s wide-ranging habitat. 

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Keeping Southwest Florida ‘bag free’

This is a little something we can each do that will have a great impact on recycling and our environment. Trashing bags is a win for the environment and for residents and visitors who enjoy Southwest Florida. The “Keep SWFL Recycling Plastic Bag Free” initiative also aims to improve recycling efficiency by reducing the time recycling workers have to spend removing plastic bags from jammed machinery.
Waste goes up significantly on holidays and Super Bowl Sunday holds the win as the highest day for waste. By launching this campaign on Super Bowl Sunday, the biggest day for trash, we hope to get people to engage in habits where they will dispose of plastic bags properly.
