The pitch-apple is a native tree and loves the salt spray. It grows well in full sun and tolerates sandy soil, which is ideal for Island trees. The pitch-apple has coarse evergreen leaves, solitary white or rose flowers and a whitish, resinous fruit, which is poisonous. It makes an ideal hedge but also can grow to be a large tree, so it is quite versatile.

“Peace Corps was wonderful to me, getting me home, handling my belongings and offering any other help I might need,” she recalled. “The day before my mother became sick, my father was diagnosed with kidney cancer and was scheduled for surgery. The operation was done three weeks after my mom’s funeral, and Dad died during surgery. They had been a couple since they were about 16 years old and had been married for 56 years. Right before a busy beach-going holiday, it is common for Boca Grande Sea Turtle Association volunteers to encounter innumerable individuals asking for additional information once they learn about the nesting of turtles on the Island. Outreach is one of the primary goals for turtle patrollers as they attempt to raise awareness and encourage participation in BGSTA. “Turtle Talks” is a children’s activity book patrollers give out during nesting season in a continuing effort to educate, inform and create interest in sea turtle nesting. 

Turtle tracks: Looking out for predators on our beaches 

Examining tracks is one indicator that help patrollers attempt to identify a possible predation, but the real challenge is determining the original predatory culprit. Once a nest has been disturbed in any way, the presence of the vulnerable eggs is inadvertently announced through scent to nearby predators.
