‘A win for Boca Grande!’ proclaims resident after prestigious placement in Sanibel shell contest

When island resident Sam Hobbs entered one of his shell works of art in the 85th Sanibel Shell Festival in the first weekend of March, he didn’t really think he would walk away a winner. After all, he had never entered a piece before in any contest, much less one as prestigious as the longest-running shell show in the world.
But he did … and he won big.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Losing yet another piece of Boca Grande uniqueness

I am writing this letter to the Boca Beacon in hopes that you will publish it in an upcoming issue and help plant the seed of an idea benefiting the entire community. I write as a friend, admirer, and long-time visitor to Boca Grande, which stands out for the way its citizens and residents have preserved the charm, history, and small-town character of the island and its town center. For the downtown area, the unpretentious traditional architecture of small-town America, white steepled churches, friendly local shops and galleries, and quality dining are what makes Boca Grande so inviting, so unique, so walkable, and so special.

To the Editor: Carroll Swayze and John Mitchell thank all who supported our first annual Grande Art Show held at the Club House of Boca Grande North.    Your attendance at the opening reception was overwhelming. Boca Grande, Miami Valley Hope For Haitians close to goal of 50 homes

When asked where she sleeps, Iltica points to the ground in Périgny, Haiti, not far from the dilapidated home that was destroyed by a devastating earthquake last August. For Iltica and other families in Périgny, their hopes for sturdy homes are about to be realized.
Construction is scheduled to begin within the next week on the first 20 of those new homes, thanks to the perseverance and dedication of Boca Grande and Miami Valley Hope For Haitians, which has raised funds to build 41 of the 50 homes and a community center that are planned in Périgny.
Longtime Hope For Haitians Committee Chairpersons Ben and Louise Scott, natives of Piqua, Ohio, and winter residents of Boca Grande, Fla., said Haiti needs help now more than ever.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Boca Grande Preschool – Putting children first

To the Editor:The Boca Grande Preschool is a little jewel on our island where caring adults compassionately embrace the Island’s children. It is a place where the young working families of Boca Grande can leave their children with the peace of mind that they are in a nurturing environment focused on meeting the students’ developmental […]

Boca Grande wildlife needs you!

Never has there been a time when wildlife rescue volunteers were needed more on Gasparilla Island. To say there is a dire lack of people willing to pick up and drive injured or ill wildlife to local rehabilitation centers is an understatement – in fact, there are virtually none. From 2005, Blanche, co-owner of The […]

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Boca Grande – a charming place made even more charming by its honest, kind people

To the Editor:
Two weeks ago, our family had a wonderful vacation in Boca Grande. It was our third visit to the island and we had rented a hundred plus-year-old cottage on Tarpon Ave. We love what a step back in time this charming town portrays. No chain stores, no high rises, no litter, no graffiti, a fabulous bike path and walking path, very little vehicular traffic, beautiful beaches, and a warm, friendly, welcoming attitude that is hard to find. Everyone is so outdoorsy and active. It is obvious the residents take great pride in their property and are grateful to live in such a special place.
