The Gasparilla Island Bridge Authority (GIBA) Quarterly Board meeting was held on Thursday, Nov. 2, in the offices of the Authority.
The members were updated on the traffic and revenue figures for the 12 months of the 2023 fiscal year. Toll revenue was up by four percent and traffic was down by three percent, compared to last year.
The Audit Committee report included an update on the fieldwork that was completed last week by auditors from Suplee Shea Cramer and Miller on the fiscal year 2023 audit. The final audit report will be presented to the GIBA Board at the February 2024 meeting.
The Governance Committee report included the approval of the annual contribution to the discretionary employee retirement fund at Corebridge Financial.
‘The Dining Room on Boca Grande’ is a theatrical feast

Imagine a dramedy of manners in a dining room on Gilchrist Avenue. Add 16 scenes time-traveling between 1917 and today. Throw 17 actors into the mix – half well-known RPP stars, the other half, brand new to our audience. Then assign each actor at least two different roles playing characters of different ages. A dash of music from each time period, plus a narrator to set the scenes, and you’ve got the recipe for a fun evening with the title, “The Dining Room on Boca Grande.”
Roger Lewis, the narrator, had a brilliant idea. What if he is a friendly ghost inhabiting this mansion who shows the audience some of the behaviors he observed over the years. His idea was the last ingredient to pull the show together.
The newcomers added just the right amount of zest.

Tarpon and snook catch $1.2 million research grant
Written by Garland Pollard on . Posted in News, Sports & Outdoors.
Increasing development and the importance of local tarpon and snook populations have spurred a $1.2 million grant from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) that will specifically target Charlotte Harbor.
“These are very specific needs of a very specific fish,” said Nicole Iadevaia, director of research and restoration for the Coastal & Heartland National Estuary Partnership. CHNEP is working on the project with a team that includes the Bonefish and Tarpon Trust, Florida’s Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and Charlotte County government.
The study is unique in that it takes into consideration economic development, and asks for “realistic options for implementing habitat protection or restoration.” It is officially titled “Implementation of a research plan to guide decisions on place-based recreational fishery conservation in Charlotte Harbor.”
