To the Editor:
This is in response to the editorial in the Beacon last week by Lee County Sheriff Mike Scott. No one is denying people the right to protect themselves, but this had nothing to do with the Orlando massacre. This mass killing never would have occured if the assault weapon ban instituted by President Reagan had not been allowed to lapse under President Bush (43).
Secondly, the shooter was being investigated by the FBI and was on the “no fly” list, but despite this was able to legally purchase the AR-15 with no problem. This insane loophole, along with private and gun show sales (many not recorded), gives anyone a chance to buy a gun. Australia had a terrible mass murder rate, but unlike America it clamped down hard on guns.
Since 1996 they have had no mass murders, while here there have been hundreds. As far as the unwarranted criticism of the president for trying to save lives with sensible gun control laws, this is straight out of Fox News and the Tea Party. President Obama warned America the war with ISIS would be long and hard. It is a total lie to say he said they were contained. We are making steady progress in the fight despite back-stabbing by the right. Most law enforcement agencies are against the sale of assault rifles, but they are apparently welcome in Lee County.
