You may have noticed construction signs on Gasparilla Road just off island, and some landscaping taking place on Placida Road north of the Boca Grande Causeway. That’s because bike path proposal that was originally created in 2014 will soon be implemented, connecting Placida road from Rotonda Boulevard West to the Boca Grande Causeway.
Construction work is scheduled to begin today, March 24, on the project.
The original project included widening Placida Road from a two to four-lane divided road from Rotonda Boulevard West to Cape Haze Drive with curbing, gutters, sidewalks and bicycle amenities. At this time the Charlotte County Board of Commissioners has put the road widening on hold, and the project has been redesigned to incorporate what the county calls “safety improvements,” which means a bike path will be installed. The county actually calls it a “sidewalk/multi-use trail.”
Utility work will also be done in conjunction with the construction of the path, which will be 10 feet wide and will be 6.5 miles long, and will run along the east side of the roadway.
