Who’s in it to win it at the Boca Grande Dog Show on Saturday?

The Boca Grande Community Center will be set up and ready for all two and four-legged contestants of the 2017 Boca Grande Dog Show, which will be held this Saturday, April 1 beginning at 10 a.m.
The field is full, according to a spokesperson for the event, so the lawn at the Community Center should be lively.
Regular groups, including herding, sporting, etc., will be part of the show, as well as a few competitions that aren’t necessarily “Westminster” in nature.
This year the two “Non-Westminster” events include costumes and musical chairs. The “look-alike” competition will be included in the costume category. All dogs (and their owners) should report to the Boca Grande Community as early as possible on the day of competition, to make sure everything is in order.
The first dog show was held on March 18, 2000, with just a handful of dogs in attendance. Categories included “Best Tail,” “Best Legs,” “Best Looks,” “Special Face,” “Special Ears,” “Manners” and “Tricks and Costumes.” Dogs in the competition included Cody Johnson, Abbegail Major, Edison Sligar, Bear Parker, Lily Lyon, Benji Butts, Raggedy Andy Moore and Khaki Bissell, to name a few.
The Master of Ceremonies this year will be Hank Cox.
Another new twist this year was the extensive amount of posters done for some of the show’s contestants.
For a fee each dog’s owner could have a personalized dog show poster created for their pet, and all money raised from the venture will be donated to Suncoast Humane Society.
This year poster sales alone raised almost $8,000 for SHS.
A Facebook page has been created for the event, called “2017 Boca Grande Woman’s Club Dog Show,” and you can view all of the posters there.
An ongoing contest has been taking place there, and the dog poster with the most likes will receive special recognition at the Yappy Hour Cocktail Party tonight, March 31, under the tent on the Community Center grounds.
See you at the dog show!
