The current providers of cellular services have begun the promised activities of sustaining service for Boca Grande.
Verizon has filed an initial permit in both Lee and Charlotte Counties for small cellular sites on the north end. Verizon is still attempting to locate another COW (Cell tower On Wheels) to supplement the service-deficient areas.
AT&T has responded by relocating their tower to the bike path and increasing its height. Users have reported improved connectivity and services. Also, diesel generators are being replaced with local electric services. AT&T is still trying to locate additional COWs for the service deficient areas on the island.

“This started when we lost friend and Boca resident Mary Tucker last summer. Then another friend, Priscilla Masselink, was diagnosed in December. Priscilla is part of a gold standard chemotherapy clinical trial at Dana Farber Cancer Institute, in Boston, Mass. (and 15 other oncology hospitals around the country) that is funded by the organization PanCAN. When I found out they were having a fundraising walk on April 29th in Tampa, I formed Team Boca and asked other friends of Mary and Priscilla to help me: Honey Skinner, Julia Pierce, Zayra Calderon and Kathy Spiteri. When we knew we had enough people, we called the PanCAN Event Organizers and asked if we could do the walk in Boca. They have been wonderful at accommodating this.”

The Johann Fust Library Foundation will present “Poetry in the Garden” next week, featuring original work by the Live Poets of Boca Grande. The poets will read a collection of their original haiku and other works. This year’s event will be enhanced by the soothing music of Julie F. Cornwall on the cello.
