Prestigious amateur golf contest held at Coral Creek Club this year
BY JACK SHORT – Just over the bridge, off Placida Road behind a tiny, unassuming sign, lies one of the most scenic golf courses in the area, The Coral Creek Club. The 18-hole, Tom Fazio designed course is private, highly exclusive, and all but invisible from the roadway.
This week, it hosted the 86th annual Women’s Amateur Championship, a statewide competition organized by the Florida State Golf Association.
The tournament began Saturday and lasted through Wednesday, featured stroke and match play, and was taken by the defending champion, Emily Rymer, who recently graduated from Florida Southern College and is rumored to be going pro next year.
She defeated her opponent, 15-year-old Alyssa Lamoureaux, of Seminole, 142 to 144.
Stroke play began with 84 amateur or college athletes who were culled to 32 players for match play.
The winner will get an automatic spot on the USGA state team for national championships, to be held in September.
