Help choose the book that the whole island will read! One Big Grande Boca Book Club, a joint project of the Johann Fust Library Foundation and Friends of the Boca Grande Community Center, is now taking nominations for the book that will be featured in next year’s program.

This year’s event, which featured three books about long-time island visitor George H.W. Bush, was a huge success. All 240 tickets were snapped up in fewer than 48 hours. Next year’s program will feature one book, and they’re looking for the book that will spark the same enthusiasm.

More than 150 communities across the United States come together once a year to read and discuss a common book, but Gasparilla may be the first island to do it.

Because the Literature Forum and most island book clubs typically explore works of fiction, OBGBBC plans to continue to focus on nonfiction books with living authors. Some books that have been mentioned are: “The Men Who United the States: America’s Explorers, Inventors, Eccentrics, and Mavericks, and the “Creation of One Nation, Indivisible by Simon Winchester”; “Elephant Company: The Inspiring Story of an Unlikely Hero and the Animals Who Helped Him Save Lives in World War II” by Vicki Croke; and “The Boys in the Boat” by Daniel James Brown.

Nominations will be accepted in person at the Library Foundation and at the Friends office, or by email at OBGBBC@mac.com through Tuesday, March 24.

Entries must include the title of the nonfiction book and a brief statement about why you think everyone on the island ought to read it. If you would like to be part of the steering committee for next year’s program, let them know that, too.

Once the nominations are processed, a shortlist will be announced for a vote, and the final choice of the book will be announced in May. Everyone will be encouraged to read the book over the summer in advance of the program in early 2016.

The goal of One Big Grande Boca Book Club is to bring the community together through a common read.
