STAFF REPORT – Weeks after the 11th annual Boca Grande Hope For Haitians reception in Boca Grande, on February 4, a deadly pandemic has emerged. The COVID-19 (coronavirus) has taken root and is spreading fast.

Boca Grande Hope For Haitians Chairpersons Ben and Louise Scott, who held the event with Food For The Poor, were recently moved by the outpouring of support to ease the suffering in the Caribbean nation.

“The humanitarian spirit is strong,” Ben Scott said. “People are still concerned about the poorest of the poor, even though they may be struggling themselves with this virus and are confined to their homes. Many are generous with their finances, and this is very uplifting for me.”

Boca Grande Hope For Haitians committed to build 150 homes over a three-year period in Savann Kabrit through Food For The Poor. Nearly 100 homes funded over the last two years have been built, and the Scotts are eager to raise enough money to build the remaining 50. Thanks to the loving support of Boca Grande Hope For Haitians donors, they are three homes away from their 50 homes goal, which will provide safe shelter for nearly 300 people.

Boca Grande Hope For Haitians Committee committed to fund 150 homes in the remote area of Savann Kabrit, Haiti, over a three-year period. Eighty of the 100 homes funded over the last two years have been built and the remaining 20 are projected to be completed by the end of February 2020, in the area east of Port-au-Prince near the border of the Dominican Republic

Food For The Poor President/CEO Ed Raine said he is extremely grateful for the continued support and wants the Boca Grande Hope For Haitians Committee to know that the Food For The Poor-Haiti office is taking measures to stay safe, and to reduce the spread of this virus while caring for those in dire need.

“Life for the truly destitute in Haiti was already hard, but is about to become nearly impossible for many,” Raine said. “With the loving support of the Boca Grande community, we will do everything that’s within our power to help the poor during this crisis now and beyond.”
