LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Preserving Placida’s legacy

In my view Placida would not be well-served with additional high-impact/traffic multiplying commercial development. Hypothetically, Eldred’s Marina could very well one day become a resort. Placida would be nothing but a bottleneck. I am urging all local residents and County Commissioners to join me in calling for the preservation of the peaceful legacy of our community by low-impact/environmentally-friendly uses of these last remaining undeveloped acres of Placida.

The Woman’s Club is bringing some exciting New Orleans flair to the island, so get out your beads and masks to decorate both you and your bike! The morning begins with the parade along the Bike Path for carts, scooters and bikes at 10:30. It starts at 5th Street and will be led by the Lemon Bay High School band. Prizes will be awarded in several categories.

ECOWATCH: Manatees’ deaths spur fight for endangered status

As the death rate of manatees continues to rise (1,101 last year and 382 since the first of this year), a rush is on to save the manatee, and one way to do so would be to get them reinstated on the Endangered Species List.
Many lawmakers and environmental groups are spurring the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS), the government agency that would make such a decision, to place the manatee back on the list. So far there has been no decision made by this agency. Letters to the FWS asking them relist this remarkable Florida marine mammal as endangered would help.

Another day, another barrier at Hill Tide

The fences at Hill Tide Estate seem to be procreating. 

While the only “new” news we have regarding the original fence is from Lee County, a new fence has appeared in the last week – this one attached to the pier the gated subdivision built … and it looks as though they have every intention of taking it from far.
Between Lee County, the DEP and the Southwest Florida Water Management District, the only agency to respond was SWFWMD. They are looking into it.
