After Lee County’s passage of a proposed plan to remove one tennis court at Wheeler Road and replace it with four pickleball courts, one local fan of tennis has organized an impromptu meeting and discussion to help encourage the county not to remove the second tennis court.
The Boca Beacon’s Letters section today, page 6, includes two comments on the issue, one supporting pickleball, and the other supporting both pickleball and tennis.
The current plan would have Gasparilla Island with only one public tennis court.
Cam Watts wrote the Beacon to say that he would like to invite all interested parties to a meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 30, at 4:30 p.m. at the Wheeler tennis courts.
“Please come to give us your feedback on the future of paddle sports on Wheeler,” said Watts.
“In case of bad weather, we will move to the Houghton room in the Community Center.”
In the interim, Watts described a possible site and alternative, so that there would be room for pickleball and tennis at Wheeler Road.
He found a company, Tennis Services of Iowa, that even drew up a schematic.
“I have gone to the Wheeler site and there is really only one spot I think this will work,” said Watts.
