The dog park at Wheeler Road Community Park, closed since June, will reopen to the public at dawn on Wednesday, Nov. 22, in time for the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.
The county started construction on the dog park in June 2022. The project was 90 percent complete, but the opening was delayed due to Hurricane Ian. A portion of the park was then used for hurricane debris. A part of the dog park temporarily opened April 1, 2023, following a March official ribbon-cutting. The park closed in June for completion of the final work.
There are large- and small-dog area, shade structures with seating, watering stations and parking space. The tennis courts and restrooms remained open during the process.
The park’s operating hours are dawn-to-dusk daily.
Lee County’s funding of the project included $150,000 in help from the Boca Grande Disaster Relief Fund.
