The Gasparilla Island Conservation and Improvement Association announced that it had met its cash goal to restore the Mercabo site.

FIFTEEN YEARS AGO

The BG Historical Society hosted its annual trip to Useppa Island. Participants enjoyed lunch at the Collier Inn and toured the museum.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

The Boca Grande Health Clinic offered free health scans. Several people said they owed their lives and good health to the scans.

TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO 

The Boca Grande Bridge Authority’s new toll plaza was open after a fifteen-month delay.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

Triton Quest received permits from the EPA to excavate sand from several shipwreck sites offshore of Gasparilla Island. The company had been searching for sunken treasure off the island since 1994.

THIRTY-FIVE YEARS AGO

Two arson fires were reported at the south end of Cayo Costa Island on the bay side. One home was burnt to the ground and was not salvageable but the other sustained $500 worth of damage.

FORTY YEARS AGO

The Boca Grande Merchants Association considered disbanding to work through the Boca Grande Chamber of Commerce. The Merchants Association was formed in 1980 in support of maintaining Port Boca Grande.

FORTY-FIVE YEARS AGO

Port proposals were being presented to the people of Boca Grande by Lee County officials.
