IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Barbara Stirling

It was time for Barbara Stirling to open a new book, to try something different. She is not one to stagnate or rest on her laurels, so the newest incarnation of Barbara is as a thespian. 

No, that is a bit grandiose for her taste. She has taken up community theater. 

“I am a novice actor. I am a behind-the-big-people-in-front kind of actor,” she insisted. “I am the kind of person who loves to watch and be with these actors and actresses. They are so enthusiastic and they are so inclusive.”

Barbara is one of several community members who have decided this year to be part of the Royal Palm Players. She is moving from an audience position to an “on stage” position. And she is loving it. She will be playing several parts in the first program of the season, “The Dining Room on Boca Grande,” opening in mid-November.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: More information about upcoming parking discussions

The structured parking plan that now seems to be a source of controversy is not about Gilchrist Ave. The plan is for the Lee County portion of Gasparilla Island. It is intended to protect our entire community from becoming a massive beach parking lot, which it soon will be because of the exploding population growth around us. Aside from the tens of thousands of platted lots on the Cape Haze Peninsula, there are thousands of new homes being built from Winchester Boulevard all the way out South River Road to I-75. Have you noticed the new subdivisions and apartments under construction on SR 776 on the way to Murdock? Where do you think all of these people will be going to the beach?

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Without parking regulation, we’re just another Coney Island

As a member of the Boca Grande Parking Committee, created by the GICIA in 2015, I am thrilled that a comprehensive parking plan is up for a vote by the Lee County commissioners on Tuesday, November 7th. Commissioner Kevin Ruane will present his structured parking proposal. It is very comprehensive, ensuring that, for example, a change in parking regulations that benefits one neighborhood doesn’t harm another. The commissioner’s plan is similar to the one he implemented very successfully in Sanibel.
Commissioner Ruane presented this plan to the Parking Committee in April 2022. The committee voted unanimously to adapt it for Boca Grande.

Gilchrist parking: It’s baaaa-ack

While Tuesday morning’s meeting of the Lee County Board of Commissioners was relatively quick and painless, with no big agenda items pertaining to Gasparilla Island, there was one public comment that is of great importance to the island and its future.

The comment was made by Mary O’Bannon, chairman of the Boca Grande Parking Committee. She attended the meeting with Vice-Chair Deb Martin and asked the Commissioners at the meeting for one thing – transparency – in an upcoming item that was to be presented to the Board at their November meeting by Commissioner Kevin Ruane, and to not leave the fate of anything in Boca Grande in the hands of one person.

HEX hearing examiner rules in favor of Gilchrist property owner – matter to be returned to BGHPB hands

A decision has been made in the case of the property owner at 161 Gilchrist Avenue vs. Lee County, heard on September 12 of this year by Chief Hearing Examiner Donna Marie Collins.

The appeal was made by the property owner and their representatives, based on their belief that in denying a special Certificate of Appropriateness to permit construction of a home (161 Gilchrist Avenue) and a garage and maintenance building on the adjoining lot (181 Gilchrist Avenue), the Boca Grande Historic Preservation Board did not apply the correct law, they did not afford the property owner due process and did not use the proper evidence to back up their denial.

Representing the County was Amanda Swindle, Esq.; representing the property owner at 161 Gilchrist Avenue were Jenna Persons-Mulicka, Esq. and Megan Strayhorn, Esq.

It was at the BGHPB’s April meeting when this item was on the agenda. Prior to any engagement, conversation or examination of the actual proposed structures on the two properties, which is all the COA was for, Board members asked about a feature on one of the properties called
the Whispering Bench.

EDITORIAL: Parking subterfuge and dangerous precedents … it must be season again

By now you’ve probably already read the story on the front page about how the Lee County Hearing Examiner announced her ruling in favor of the property owner at 161 Gilchrist Avenue. Discussion about this particular Certificate of Appropriateness at the Boca Grande Historic Preservation Board meeting last spring was supposed to center around the proposed home with a plan for both 161 and 181 Gilchrist Avenue, which are the two lots the property owner purchased together. They apparently could not be combined intAo one strap number at the time, due to one being contributing (the one in front, where the old cottage used to be) and one that was noncontributing (the parcel with the home, Gulf side).

There might be a lot of people angry about that decision, and many of those people will give the argument that the proposed home is “too big.” Those people will also more than likely bring up the Whispering Bench, a round seating area that was located on the Gulf front parcel, a seating area with particular acoustics that allowed a person to just barely whisper at one end of the circle but amplified that whisper so everyone in the circle could hear it clearly. It was a parlor trick bench that Louise du Pont Crowninshield had built back in the 1920s, because she thought other benches of the sort that she had seen were pretty cool. She wanted one, she had one built by a rather famous architect, and her guests enjoyed it until she was gone. After that the property had different owners prior to the current property owner, ending with the Sligar family who built the existing house there.

None of those property owners felt the need to call attention to any special qualities or historic significance of the Whispering Bench.

At the meeting in the spring when the proposal for a new home at 161/181 Gilchrist Avenue was presented, there were a lot of people there. Most of them came to hear what was going to happen to the Whispering Bench. It wasn’t on the agenda, and it wasn’t up for discussion, because in the eyes of Lee County or anyone looking at the existing structures and features on the two lots, there was only one that was listed as a historically contributing structure – a small cottage that stood next to the sidewalk by Gilchrist Avenue.

So why were so many people there on behalf of the Whispering Bench? As anyone knows who has lived in a small town, word gets around quickly. The word that had been going around was that the Whispering Bench was going to be demolished if the new house plan passed, and everyone wanted to have their say about it. Who knows who started the chatter, and who knows why it was suddenly determined that the Whispering Bench was something that needed to be saved at that very moment in time? But the people were there, the faces were frowning, and the folks who came to support the C of A for the new house had a big job in front of them.

As you might have guessed by this point in the story, the Whispering Bench had already eclipsed discussion surrounding the plan for the proposed home, even before the meeting was called to order. Decisions had already been made in people’s minds that they had to do whatever it took to make sure that Whispering Bench wasn’t destroyed. And if that meant denying a proposal to make it happen … oh well.
