Every morning I pick up trash….even things as small as cigarette butts….along the bike trail when I’m walking home. One morning this week, there were quite a few signs that had been put up along the path urging us all to be polite and careful. They did not appear to be official, so, mistaking them for an individual making a personal statement on a right of way used by just about everyone, I removed them.

Florida is known for many things, among them beautiful warm weather, white sandy beaches, stunning sunsets and gorgeous foliage. However, there is also another side of Florida that is not in the travel brochures, and that is its rating on wild animal attacks.

As the death rate of manatees continues to rise (1,101 last year and 382 since the first of this year), a rush is on to save the manatee, and one way to do so would be to get them reinstated on the Endangered Species List.
Many lawmakers and environmental groups are spurring the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS), the government agency that would make such a decision, to place the manatee back on the list. So far there has been no decision made by this agency. Letters to the FWS asking them relist this remarkable Florida marine mammal as endangered would help.
