STAFF REPORT – The nominations are in for the 2020 Florida Press Association “Better Weekly Newspaper” contest, and the Boca Beacon is sitting on 16 nominations in various categories.
The Beacon received two nominations out of three in the “Sports Page or Section” category, with entries from Capt. Sandy Melvin and the Beacon’s Art Director, Daniel Godwin in the running.
Two of our readers – William and Raphaela Meyers of Little Gasparilla Island – submitted a group of photos that was nominated in the “Best Photo Series in an Issue” category. Another pair of contributors named Candace Ward and Ilene Corbett have been nominated for the “Best Reader-generated Photo” award.
Boca Beacon Editor Marcy Shortuse and Daniel Godwin were nominated in the “Special Issue/Supplement” division.
Shortuse and Godwin were also nominated in the “Community Service” category. Shortuse was also nominated for awards in the “Community History,” “Best Obituary,” “Agricultural and Environmental Reporting,” “Investigative Reporting,” “Best General News Story,” and “Best Breaking News Story” categories.
Columnist Delores Savas was nominated in the “Agricultural and Environmental Reporting” category, Beacon cartoonist Dave Horton was nominated for “Best Editorial Cartoon,” and Island School Teacher Jane Bengston was nominated in the “Best Feature Story” category for her piece on teaching remotely during the time of COVID-19.
We will find out this summer who the first, second and third place winners are at the Florida Press Association Awards weekend in July.
