golf-courseIt’s a tale of two tournaments coming up in the next few days, which should leave avid island golfers in a heavenly cloud of bliss. Both the Boca Grande Area Chamber of Commerce Scramble and the Barrier Island Parks Society (BIPS) Golf Scramble will be held on the Pete Dye-designed golf course at The Gasparilla Inn & Club.
The Boca Grande Scramble Golf Tournament, scheduled for Monday, Oct. 10, is the major fundraiser for the Boca Grande Chamber Scholarship Fund and The Boca Grande Area Chamber of Commerce. Golfers will begin registering at 11 a.m., then begin play at 12:30 p.m. The tournament will be followed by an awards party featuring culinary delights from The Inn’s talented chefs, and many great prizes at The Gasparilla Inn Beach Club.
Call Brian Corcoran at 964-8180 or email him at if you have any questions.
The BIPS Golf Scramble will be held on Monday, Oct. 17 at The Gasparilla Inn Golf Course. All proceeds of the event will support the restoration project now underway to repair and recondition our historic Gasparilla Island Light (GIL/Rear Range Light).
Jim Grant, tournament chair, said a putting contest, 18 holes of scramble- format golf, beverage carts on the course, golf prizes for skill shots and winning teams, and a gala post-event cocktail party are featured entertainment of the day.
“To date, we have 15 teams registered but would sure like a full slate of 22 teams – that is our goal,” Grant said. “It would be hard to find a more fun event in our own backyard for such a great cause!”
Grant acknowledged that the timing would have been better later in the season, when more snowbirds were in residence, but the gracious gesture by The Gasparilla Inn to sponsor this event must precede their busy time.
To sign up, call 964-0060. The cost is $250 per person (the golf staff will put groups of less than four together) or $1,000 per foursome.
