Boca Beacon backpages

FIVE YEARS AGO

There was a mass exodus of man-o-wars parading through our waters. The Fishery Pier was on fire.

TEN YEARS AGO

The Boca Grande Dog Show took place with Danielle, a pointer, winning the Boca Bowser category.

FIFTEEN YEARS AGO

Residents said “no” to bike bridges at a meeting held by the Gasparilla Island Bridge Authority. The six-foot wide sidewalks, which would have cost an extra  $2 million, were vetoed by the public and never made it into the final plans.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

A South Beach waiter and cook saved three children from drowning in the Gulf. Mike Mills and Fred Monzeglio worked together helping the kids to safety.

TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO

Florida Power and Light announced that as of January, 2002 it would no longer be needing its Port Boca Grande oil terminal. Lee County Commissioner John Manning swore it would become a public park.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

Lee County Commission passed an interlocal agreement with Charlotte County for the provision of emergency medical services by Lee County Emergency Medical Services to the Charlotte County portion of Boca Grande.

THIRTY-FIVE YEARS AGO

More than 10,000 people attended the 4th annual Seafood Festival in Placida. The Armadillo Brothers Band was playing, by the way. That could have been the big draw.
