Lee County recycling is number one, but there is still much work to be done

Lee County Solid Waste has been named Florida’s top county recycling operator by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP). The amount of material Lee County residents recycled in 2021 would be enough to fill 168 football fields with material 70 feet high – as high as the highest point on the Sanibel Causeway.  Lee […]

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Florida gas prices dip down slightly through holiday weekend, but the future is unknown with a volatile fuel market

Experts believe that gas prices are being dragged lower by falling crude oil prices, which suffered steep losses this past week on worries of a global economic slowdown. If these futures price drops hold, drivers could see Florida gas prices drift back below $4.10 per gallon. However, this is still an extremely volatile fuel market. On Tuesday, the price for U.S. crude oil plummeted, falling below $100 a barrel for the first time in eight weeks. Tuesday’s closing price of $99.50 per barrel is nearly $9 (16 percent) less than the week before, and the lowest daily settlement since April 25.

Lee County Commissioners dedicate Conservation 20/20 preserve to colleague; GS-10 Preserve renamed Frank Mann Preserve

“Commissioner Mann was a tireless advocate for the people of east Lee County and for recreational opportunities, amenities and open spaces in District 5,” said Chairman Cecil Pendergrass, who made the motion to approve the name change. “Frank was instrumental in both the creation of the preserve and the opening earlier this year of part of the site for fishing and kayaking.”

Who are these groups of cyclists around Cape Haze?

As to the rides, they take place every day and can have as few as two or three riders in the heat of the summer, to 20 or 30 riders during the season, when many snowbirds migrate south. Riders come from far and wide. Carrie comes from Wyoming each winter, and Rob usually makes it from Jersey – no, not New Jersey but the island in the Channel off England. Others come from all over the U.S., but mainly from the northeastern and midwestern states. The rides are mainly in Rotonda, Gulf Cove, South Gulf Cove, the Meadows, or on any given holiday CHC ventures to Boca Grande. There is an occasional ride from Manasota Key to Casey Key, but mainly the rides stay in the Cape Haze peninsula. Several riders have raced in the past ,and many completed various long-distance trips.
