There comes a time in many kids’ lives when they have to realize they have to pony up and take on the big fish … to stare that giant silver king in the eye and tell him he’s been bested. We’re hoping a lot of that takes place on Saturday, June 11 during the Gasparilla Island Kids’ Classic, a tournament that has become a well-loved island tradition since 2014.

REMEMBRANCES: 1942: Life in America 80 years ago

Memorial day is, by definition, a time for remembering. But only a few people on earth today were alive in 1942 as eyewitnesses to one of the bleakest years in our country’s history. Through no fault or achievement of my own, I am one of them. I salute the rare few still-living fellow Americans who served our country at that time.

TURTLE TRACKS: Beach obstructions deadly for our sea turtles

Gasparilla Island sea turtles have other issues to overcome in addition to predation. Beachgoers pose a unique and specific threat to sea turtles by leaving assorted items behind. ECOWATCH: Let’s reflect on the true meaning of Memorial Day

Many forget that Memorial Day is a day to remember, honor and mourn for all the U.S. military personnel who have died while serving in our armed forces, to keep our country safe for all and to protect the freedoms we often take for granted.
Since the end of the Revolutionary War, 646,596 troops have died in battle. Sadly, many deaths do not occur on the battlefield. Some 30,177 U,S, servicemen and veterans died by suicide between September 11, 2001 and the end of 2019. Currently 9 million veterans are enrolled in the Veterans Administration’s treatment centers for post-traumatic stress disorder, PTSD.

Just days away from hurricane season: Are you ready for a big year?

The hurricane hangtag program includes a four-zone system. Your zone will be printed on your hangtag to better track where one should be and to allow for phased re-entry, if warranted. Limited access at the time of return could be delayed due to any ongoing response and/or recovery efforts in Boca Grande.
