Reference: Lee and Charlotte County waste agreement

October 1, 2020
By Staff Report

Because of the distance between Boca Grande and Lee County, Charlotte County is the provider for trash removal on all of Gasparilla Island.

The two counties have an interlocal agreement that runs from Oct. 1, 2020 to Sept. 30, 2030.

Under the agreement, Charlotte County provides routine collection and disposal services to Lee County residents on the island, while residents on both sides of the county line may access certain waste-management facilities and programs offered by the other county. The agreement also provides a framework for Charlotte County to assist Lee County with disaster debris, excess waste and other disposal needs when mutually agreed upon. Lee County is responsible for applicable Charlotte County collection, processing and disposal fees, with rates subject to periodic adjustment. The agreement took effect in 2020 for an initial five-year term and provides for automatic five-year renewals unless either county gives notice of nonrenewal. The document also includes provisions addressing commercial waste, recycling revenues, dispute resolution, liability and supplemental services.

The agreement summary is HERE. The full cooperation document between the two counties is HERE.
