To the Editor:

Kudos to The Beacon for its coverage of Joe Weir’s departure from The Boca Grande Community Center.

Joe was a well-known and highly respected figure in the Boca Grande Community. It is certainly appropriate for the Beacon and others to wonder why he is no longer working here.

We also returned this fall to find that Dr. Lauren Hana of The Boca Grande Health Clinic, another well-known and highly respected professional, was no longer working here. We understand that personnel issues are private and confidential, but to the outside world, she appeared competent and caring. Her leaving is a loss for the community and especially for those of us for whom she was our primary care physician. We were all grateful for the science-based approach that Dr Hana took to preserve the health of all island residents. The Boca Grande Pledge saved many lives.

We all agree that the Clinic is an enormous asset to the community. Many of us could not be living here without the proximity of first class medical care. The addition of a woman doctor several years ago was a huge bonus for the community and for the women on the Island.

We were further surprised to see that Dr Hana was being replaced by a man with no particular expertise in women’s health. We would like to know what efforts were taken to recruit a woman doctor and if those efforts are ongoing. A woman nurse practitioner would be a welcome addition.

We know that the best disinfectant is daylight. We are all looking forward to hearing from the Clinic as to the steps taken to find a female medical professional for the Island.
