Gasparilla Island State Park is finishing a regrade at the Port Boca Grande Lighthouse. Bulldozers and sand trucks were on hand this week to grade the potholes in the park and in the entrance driveway.

This week, crews at the park also blocked off dune areas with a fence to protect them from pedestrians.

There has been a steady stream of work at the park since Hurricane Ian.

On December 1, the state finished a project to remove invasive plants on the southern half of the island, north of Boca Grande Pass.

The park reopened to the public on April 13, 2023. A few historic structures – the 133-year-old lighthouse and connected gift shop, and the chapel – sustained damage to roofs and floors and remains closed to the public while repairs are ongoing. That work began in October.

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection has replaced the roofs for the Boca Grande Lighthouse and Museum and Amory Chapel.
