BY SUE ERWIN – The owners of a new floral shop in town called Boca Blooms will be hosting an open house celebration on Friday, Jan 22 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday, Jan. 23 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.
There will be food, drinks and live music at the open house.
A barbershop quartet is planned to provide entertainment on Friday.
Dodo Hamilton, who is well known for her successful orchids and decorative floral establishments here in Boca Grande as well as in Pennsylvania, is the owner of the store.
President of the business is Barbara King, who was 18 years old when she began working with Dodo.
“It’s more than just a flower shop. The store will offer a little bit of everything. It’s about lifestyle and a unique shopping experience,” King said. “We shop everywhere, and we are always open to suggestions.”
A combination of live plants and cut flowers will be available as well as gardening décor, candles and patio furniture.
“Many of these items are unique and would make a nice hostess gift or could brighten up any room,” King said.
King started out in the business doing floral creations for Dodo’s home. “She is known as the garden guru of the Philadelphia area,” King said.
The floral business also runs deep in King’s family.
“My grandparents had a flower shop in New York City, so it’s definitely in my blood,” King said.
There are four employees who will help run the store. They will also offer full service event planning.
“We hope to offer workshops and do container gardening using either the customer’s container or one we provide,” King said. “We also notice a void of silk flowers here on the island, so we will offer faux flower arrangements.”
King said Dodo is currently working with a horticulturist on plans for the rest of the property behind the building. The focus will be on getting more patio furniture, statues and fountains. They also have custom-built bikes that were purchased in France. They have two-speed automatic shifting and come in a variety of pastel colors.
“It’s all about adding beauty to both indoor and outdoor living,” King said.
The store is located at 411 Palm Ave. Hours of operations will be 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday.
