BY ANGIE MILLS AND MARCY SHORTUSE –  The 4th Annual Turnin’ Tides Invitational, is now in the history books. It began with a whole lot of patient anglers biting their nails for two hours, and ended with 20 minutes of exceptional activity with four boats battling it out for the “last fish” award.
With a little more than 30 minutes left in the tournament, Capt. Waylon Mills on the Blaze hooked and released the first fish a little after 8 p.m. to take first place.
Capt. Charlie Coleman on the Casuarina then hooked and released the second fish of the tournament to take second place.
With only a few minutes to go Duece hooked a fish, then Searene, Jill Marie and Faithful II, with Faithful II hooking and releasing their fish last (with one of the smallest fish ever seen in a tournament, but it still counted), to seal third place and the last fish caught.
“We had a great turn out with 12 boats, and I would like to thank all who participated for their continued support for the tournament,” said tournament coordinator Angie Mills. “With this tournament marking the season’s end every year, it always has a community feel. Everyone knows everyone on the teams, which makes for a friendly competition.”

Mills had many thanks to give to the community and tournament sponsors, which included The Temptation, The Barnichol Hardware store, Key Agency, The Boca Beacon, Hudson’s Grocery and Gasparilla Outfitters/Special Effects for their continued support.
“This tournament would not be possible without them,” Angie said. “And a special ‘thanks’ to Smitty and all his judges for their help. Smitty’s voice somehow always makes a tournament.”
See you next tournament season but, in the mean time, there’s still lots of time to catch ‘em up.
