Hill Tide placed “No Trespassing” signs on the beach including yellow barricade tape and a security guard to limit access to their private beach.

TEN YEARS AGO

Barrier Island Parks Society reported that they had achieved 60 percent of their goal of $1,783,000 to complete all the work on the lighthouse restoration project.

FIFTEEN YEARS AGO

The iconic curvy palm that grew next to The Temp had not survived the cold winter and was replaced thanks to an anonymous donor. The replacement was dedicated to a dear friend of the donor.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

The Island School broke ground for their new 6,000 square-foot classroom building that would be located on the grounds of the Boca Grande Community Center.

TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO 

Lee County gave tentative approval to the Friends of the Boca Grande Community Center to build a small addition to the Crowninshield Community House.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

The Gasparilla Island Bridge Authority bill was passed by the Florida Legislature and was sitting on Gov. Lawton Chiles’ desk awaiting his approval.

THIRTY-FIVE YEARS AGO

Theatre by the Bay held its first theater camp for students at the Lemon Bay High School’s new Performing Arts Center. The Boca Grande Art Alliance was offering scholarships for the camp.

FORTY YEARS AGO

Bascule Venture’s “Bridge Busters” bid the old railroad bridge a bon voyage with a party. 

FORTY-FIVE YEARS AGO

Dredging equipment was moved into the area in preparation of dredging the Boca Grande channel at the south end of Gasparilla Island.
