November 9, 2023
By Staff Report

Two rare Neiman serigraphs will be auctioned off at the YMCA 27th Annual Tropical Nights fundraiser on November 18, 2023. The event kicks off at 5 p.m. at Palm Island Resort. Cocktails and gourmet dinner catered by Rum Bay Restaurant will accompany a live and silent auction featuring many other items including local artwork, vacation packages, golf, wine and more. Music and dancing to follow.

First auction item:

LEROY NEIMAN, artist

The DiMaggio Cut

1998 SERIGRAPH, Appraisal Value $15,000.

Joe DiMaggio’s flawless 13-year career leading the New York Yankees and record-setting 56-consecutive game hitting streak in 1941 cemented him as one of the most unforgettable players in baseball. He was married to silver screen stars Marilyn Monroe and Dorothy Arnold. “The Yankee Clipper” was an American hero and cultural icon. He was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1955.

This prized Limited Edition Serigraph by LeRoy Neiman showcases DiMaggio’s glory with gorgeous colors. It is number 305 of a 458-print series, (and a total of 556 impressions in the world including artist proofs). This limited edition is hand signed by both Joe DiMaggio and LeRoy Neiman in pencil. This piece is in MINT condition. Authenticated by Franklin Bowles Galleries and accompanying certificate. The serigraph measures 39 inches wide x 32 inches tall. The framed dimensions are approximately 51.5 x 45 inches.

Second auction item:

LEROY NEIMAN, artist

Mark McGwire

1999 SERIGRAPH, Appraisal Value $10,500.

Mark McGwire of the St. Louis Cardinals hit 70 home runs in the 1998 baseball season, shattering the previous record held by Roger Maris, and affirming his place as a modern baseball legend.

When asked about the art, Neiman confessed that his initial intention was to do a 3×4 foot painting, but “he couldn’t possibly contain a man of his majestic size and strength and accomplishment within that space” so he switched to a 4×6 foot canvas. The art shows McGwire just after hitting a home run, with his sharp eyes following the ball as it rockets out of the stadium. Neiman also said that he followed Mark’s unbelievable progress every day in newspapers and on TV while he was painting the piece, and worked over a period of time between his 55th and 70th home runs.

The energy and power of this painting speaks for itself, with pinks and yellows highlighting the health and vitality of the player. This is number 204 of 509 limited edition serigraph paper prints (619 total impressions worldwide including artist proofs). Hand signed by LeRoy Neiman and held in a private collection. This piece is in Excellent condition, authenticated by Franklin Bowles Galleries and accompanying certificates. The serigraph measures 44 inches tall x 28 inches wide. Framed under glass, triple matted with a golden frame, approximate dimensions 56 x 39 inches.

Local artist Kelly Reark Borza will also be donating a piece to the auction, so stop by to see her amazing work … and possibly take it home.

Proceeds benefit the Children and Families Scholarship Fund and programs at the Warren Loranger Englewood YMCA.
