Delorese ‘Dee’ Green Wheeler, 75, of Boca Grande, Florida, passed away peacefully Friday, May 12, 2017.
Dee was born August 30, 1941 in Sarasota, the daughter of Lewis and Martha Shirling. She graduated from Venice High School and received an AA degree from St. Petersburg Community College.
Married in 1964, she was a loving, devoted wife to William ‘Dumplin’ Wheeler III, for 53 years. Dee was Director of the Boca Grande Community Center for 32 years, where she started the first summer camp in Lee County, the Munchkin Preschool and Afterschool programs, and founded the nonprofit “Friends of the Boca Grande Community Center.” The Dee Wheeler Scholarship Fund was established in her honor.
Dee was the loving mother of Stephanie Taylor and husband Rodney, of Port Charlotte, and Brandy Jenner and husband Mike, of Charlotte, North Carolina. She was a selfless, nurturing Granny to Chassity (23), Amber (23), Brianna (20), Shaelyn (15), Trea (12) and Chase (8) Taylor, and Jayden (8) and Jonah (5) Jenner.
A viewing will be held from 10 to 11 a.m., with the services to follow at the United Methodist Church of Boca Grande on Saturday, May 20. A celebration of Dee’s life will directly follow at P.J.’s Seagrille.
