What happened to Joe? Parks & Rec director resigns after two decades of service

Heads were exploding and hearts were breaking this week as word slowly trickled out that Joe “Jungle Joe” Wier, an employee of Lee County Parks and Recreation for more than 20 years, was no longer working at the Boca Grande Community Center.

There are at least two interim directors taking Wier’s place until everything is sorted out, which will be a difficult task at best considering Wier held the keys to scheduling for the Community Center, Boca Grande DOT duties, all special events held at the Center, summer camp, permitting for functions on Banyan Street and the Crowninshield House and much more.

Officials could only say, “Lee County Government does not comment on personnel matters,” and that the hoop shoot was still on.
