Island resident Gary Siler is used to watching his wife, Chris, pick up trash and other items from the beach when they’re out walking, but last Saturday she found something that had both of them quite puzzled. As they walked that particular day they came across a regular Coke bottle, which Chris originally thought was just garbage. As she bent down to pick it up, though, she noticed the bottle had a note in it … as well as something else. The note read, “James D. Krahn, a committed Socialist, whose dream was to go to Cuba. If you find him, please send him off in hopes his dream comes true.” Yes, the bottle contained human ashes. Now we as an island people have a mission: Let’s get James to Cuba, whether we agree with his politics or not. No other information is available at this time. There are obituary listings for a James Krahn – one from Texas and one from Minnesota – and a potential candidate from Wisconsin. None of them entirely match up by middle initial, though. If you have any friends or contacts who might be traveling to Cuba in the future, contact the Boca Beacon at 964-2995 and ask for Marcy. James will be here, waiting, in hopes of someday touching the soil he so longed to set foot upon.
