FIVE YEARS AGO

Work had begun on the expansion project at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church with the home next door razed and the lot cleaned.

TEN YEARS AGO

The Gasparilla Island Bridge Authority and Lee County began an interlocal agreement to give Department of Transportation vehicles access over the bridge allowing them to take heavier loads.

FIFTEEN YEARS AGO

Munchkins Day was held for dads and grandpas with juice, Cheetos and much singing. Charlie Tyler celebrated a birthday at South Beach with family and friends.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

The new owner of Hudson’s finished renovation at Hudson’s Park. The renovation was done by Gulf to Bay Tree & Landscape Services.

TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO 

Royal Palm Players held a Clown College for the youth. Winds blowing in the area caused a tree to topple which took out power lines leading to a 16-hour power outage on the Island.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

Work was expected to begin on the Hermitage House. The historic building had been moved about 60 feet east of its original site and was awaiting extensive renovation to repair the roof and exterior.

THIRTY-FIVE YEARS AGO

Lee County Zoning Division ordered the Boca Bay development to stop construction on the south end of the island due to zoning violations.

FORTY YEARS AGO

The Florida State Legislature approved a $150,000 appropriation for planning and design of the state recreation area on Gasparilla Island.

FORTY-FIVE YEARS AGO

A new Wildlife Center on Captiva was scheduled to be opened and used by the Center for Care and Rehabilitation of Wildlife group.
