Several people were spearfishing at the end of Belcher Road and were confronted by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

The Barrier Island Parks Society announced that it had received final written approval from the United States Coast Guard to commence “rehabilitation of the Gasparilla Island Rear Range Lighthouse.”

FIFTEEN YEARS AGO

The Island School received a collection of seashells of every shape and size to decorate its entrance. The donation was made by George Melissas, owner of Shell Horizons.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

About 437 miles west of Boca Grande a 6.0 earthquake was registered on the Richter Scale and felt in Boca Grande and throughout Florida.

TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO 

A National Day of Prayer was proclaimed. Islanders were invited to gather at the flagpole at 5th Street and Gilchrist Avenue.

Nightly bridge closings had begun and would continue for six weeks as the pilings of the swing span were replaced.

The Lee County Hearing Examiner determined that The Gasparilla Inn’s proposed building plans would violate the 100-foot buffer area required for an adjacent residential neighborhood and denied the appeal.

A Boca Grande children’s community chorus was being organized for a Christmas and spring concert. The group, Boca Grande Community Singers, was made up of elementary and middle school children.

One hundred years ago, Capt. J. Francis LeBaron discovered phosphate pebbles in the Peace River.
