BY MARCY SHORTUSE – Lee County Department of Transportation will be coming to the island to begin roadwork that includes a bigger bike path at the south end and Gasparilla Road widening.
Ajax Paving Industries of Florida, LLC was chosen to do the road resurfacing and bike path widening. The cost of the project is $2.3 million. The money comes from local-option gas taxes.
The bike path will be widened from 1st Street to Belcher Road. The path is maintained by Lee County Parks & Recreation but is owned by Lee County DOT.
Lee County will be paving 6.5 miles of Gasparilla Road as well as adding four-foot shoulders on both sides of the road. The streets to be repaved include segments of Gasparilla Road, Gilchrist Avenue, Gulf Boulevard, Fifth Street West, Waterways Avenue, Lee Avenue, Tarpon Avenue, West Railroad Avenue, Third Street West and Fourth Street West.
All work is scheduled to be completed by two weeks after Thanksgiving.
During the time of construction, there will be machinery parked on the Wheeler Street Ballfield, so don’t plan any softball games for awhile.
