Fort Myers radio club at Lighthouse on Sat., Aug. 3
Are you ready for an exciting outdoor adventure that combines history, technology and community? Join us for the Parks on the Air event, an international radiosport award program that invites licensed amateur radio operators to explore and operate portable equipment in parks and public lands, all while respecting the environment and fellow park visitors.
This year, we’re celebrating the US National Lighthouse Day and the National Lighthouse-Lightship Weekend (NLLW) with a special Parks on the Air (POTA) activation at Boca Grande/Gasparilla State Park, home to the historic Port Boca Grande Lighthouse. On Saturday, August 3, from 8:30 AM to 2:00 PM, come experience the thrill of amateur radio in a stunning coastal setting.
Discover the rich history of the Port Boca Grande Lighthouse, built in 1890 to guide ships safely into Charlotte Harbor. This unique iron screw pile design lighthouse, visible from up to 12 miles away, is one of only six in Florida open to the public and the only one on the west coast. After 20 years of abandonment, it was beautifully restored and rededicated in 1986, and it now stands proudly on the National Register of Historic Places.
The Fort Myers Amateur Radio Club Inc. will be hosting this special event, offering you a chance to see amateur radio in action and learn about the fascinating world of radiosport. Whether you’re a seasoned operator or new to the hobby, there’s something for everyone. Plus, you’ll get to enjoy the beautiful surroundings of Gasparilla State Park and support the efforts of the Barrier Island Parks Society, who help manage and operate the lighthouse.
Don’t miss out on this unique opportunity to celebrate our maritime heritage, explore amateur radio, and enjoy a day at one of Florida’s most picturesque state parks. Mark your calendars and join us for a day of fun, learning and community!
