The votes are in, and the next “One Big Grande Boca Book will be “Elephant Company.”
This inspiring, true story of an unlikely hero and the animals who helped him save lives in World War II was the clear favorite in the community balloting that concluded on April 22.
For the second year, the Johann Fust Library Foundation, the Friends of Boca Grande Community Center, and The Gasparilla Inn & Club are joining to sponsor this free, community-wide reading event.
The author, Vicki Croke, will be the featured speaker at the OBGBBC event, scheduled for the afternoon of January 31, 2016 at The Gasparilla Inn Beach Club.
According to the OBGBBC Steering Committee, other parts of the program may include a talk by experts from an elephant sanctuary in Florida, children’s programs, movies and music.
Some members of the committee have already been heard humming Henry Mancini’s “Elephant Walk.”
Attendance at the event will be free to the public, but tickets will be required. Details on the program and on how to get tickets will be announced later this fall.
Between now and then, you’ve got plenty of time to read – or listen to – this fascinating tale of men and elephants and war, which received rave reviews in The New York Times, The Boston Globe, and on National Public Radio.
Elephant Company is available at the Johann Fust Community Library in many formats – hardcover, large print, CD, downloadable e-book, and downloadable audio book.
Librarian Toni Vanover and her staff are ready to help you locate the book in the format you want. You can reach them at 964-2488 or stop by the Lirbary. The Library Foundation will have copies to sell before and at the event, where the author will sign them. Of course, you can also order it through Amazon.com or Audible.com, too.
Add Elephant Company to your summer reading list, and mark January 31, 2016 on your calendar!
