This Community Croquet program opens the game to anyone who is interested, for one day or the whole season.

Community croquet is back for its second year of play on the “great lawn” at the Boca Grande Community Center. The father and daughter team of Hans and Rebecca Peterson will be leading the no-stress play every Thursday afternoon at 3 p.m., along with other skilled instructors.

All ages and skill levels are welcome to join in the fun, according to organizer Hans Zimmerman. Children are encouraged to participate, provided they are with a responsible adult. All necessary equipment will be provided, so “All you have to do is show up,” said Hans. No advanced registration is necessary.

“Experience the joy of croquet,” he said. “It will be good for your heart, mind and soul.” Light refreshments will be provided, and there is no charge to participate.

This year new instructors will be on hand, including Sue Williams, a member of the Sarasota County Croquet Club, the largest public club of its sort in the entire country, with over 300 members. Williams adds another point of interest, as she is a professional equestrian trainer, as well. She will be a lead instructor for the Boca Grande Community Croquet program this year.

Another new feature this year will be the addition of a croquet league.

“We wanted to have something for those who wish to play on a more competitive level,” Hans said.

Games will be scheduled and played throughout the season, with the results used to determine the finalists for the 2024 Island Croquet Championship match to be held in March.

Nearly everyone knows how to play croquet, even if they are not sure of the finer details. It is often fondly remembered as something they played in their grandparents’ yard. The nostalgia is still part of the game, but if someone wants to add some excitement, there are ways to make it more competitive.

He said there is a long history of croquet being played on the island, but it has usually been reserved for those who are members of private clubs. This Community Croquet program opens the game to anyone who is interested, for one day or the whole season.

Hans said he, or any of the instructors, can teach almost anyone to play the game in a matter of minutes, with skill developing as they become more familiar with the ins and out of play. He encouraged everyone to come and give it a try.

This Community Croquet program is sponsored by Michael Saunders & Company, with the support of Friends of Boca Grande.
