Island legend Lowell Bell and his son, Grant, visited the island to tell stories of how it was back in the day. Lowell hadn’t been back for many years and said he couldn’t believe the change that had taken place.

Jared Miller was “Fisher Boy” and Savannah Pope was “Fisher Girl” for the youth fishing tournament

Smoke from wildfires in Florida and Georgia blanketed the Gulf Coast, bringing darkness to Park Avenue in broad daylight.

Clara Futch passed away, and the island’s favorite teacher, Margaret Fugate, was profiled. Ruhama’s Books in the Sand featured a book signing by Randy Wayne White.

Fred the snowy egret and Bill Tate of Boca Grande Pass Marina were just hanging out at the dock, having become good friends. “Revenge of the Space Pandas” was the entertainment of the week, featur- ing “bossy bad ruler George Topax and his band of space pandas.”

FORTY YEARS AGO

An article about booming real estate and an increase in housing costs and taxes was written. Many families were being forced to move off island, including fourth-generation islander Sandi Johnson, who operated the Osprey Boutique at Miller’s Marina.
