An award-winning editor of Outside Magazine and author of the bestselling histories Hellhound on his Trail, Blood and Thunder and Ghost Soldiers, Sides will present his fifth and most recent best seller – In the Kingdom of Ice, The Grand and Terrible Polar Voyage of the USS Jeanette. This story presents the gripping, historical account of the last major attempt to reach the North Pole in the Age of Sail. This little known tale of American history reads like a psychological thriller set in a “howling, deadly wilderness.” Hampton Sides C Gary Oakley
Lt. Commander George Washington DeLong left the port of San Francisco in 1879 with a crew of thirty-two men on what became a 1,000 mile trek across the Arctic Ocean. Launched with international fanfare, the expedition was terribly deceived by the imperfect geographic knowledge of the era. When his wooden ship became trapped in pack ice, the fiercely determined Capt. DeLong and his men faced ferocious storms, polar bears, madness and starvation in pursuit of their goal.
The Times of London describes this book as “Enthralling … a brilliant explosion of narrative non-fiction; detailed, moving, harrowing, as gripping as any well-paced thriller but a lot more interesting because it is also true.” In the words of the NYT Book Review, “Sides illuminates Gilded Age Society, offering droll anecdotes of James Gordon Bennett’s escapades in New York, Newport and Europe.” Bennett, the eccentric, stupendously wealthy and flamboyant publisher of the New York Herald, financed “The Grand and Terrible Polar Voyage.”
In the Kingdom of Ice is listed as “A Best Book of the Year” by USA Today, The Washington Post, Miami Herald, Richmond Times Dispatch, The Christian Science Monitor, the Daily Beast and the Minneapolis Star Tribune. Sides is a native of Memphis, Tennessee, a Yale graduate and winner of a 2002 PEN Center USA Award.
