FIVE YEARS AGO

GIBA announced that a contract had been awarded for the construction of the southern roadway sidewalk which would include paved shoulders, concrete sidewalk and curbing.

TEN YEARS AGO

Island firefighters rescued a woman from the water between Pine Island and Cayo Costa where the currents quickly carried her away from her boat. 

FIFTEEN YEARS AGO

A 135-foot barge was carrying five tons of rock to the El Jobean bridge when it broke loose from its tow, a 25-foot tug named Renee. The barge ended up at the concrete dock south of the Boca Bay Pass Club.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

Darrell and Margaret Polk retired and sold The Barnichol. Katrina brought a breezy day to the island but devastated New Orleans.

TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO 

The drought was officially over when the island received more than 6 inches of rain. Stump Pass Park on Manasota Key was dedicated and opened.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

The Boca Grande Chamber of Commerce held its Annual Labor Day Picnic which was open to all residents and visitors.

THIRTY-FIVE YEARS AGO

The Boca Grande Range Light was veiled with heavy netting, a screen-type tarp. The netting was used to capture any excess spray as it was being painted.

FORTY YEARS AGO

The Charlotte County Commission and Gaspar Inc came to an agreement with the bridge discount coupons to stop the abuse of the system. The Boca Grande Historic Railroad Depot was listed for sale.
