The Barrier Island Parks Society (BIPS) will reopen the historic Port Boca Grande Lighthouse and Museum at Gasparilla Island State Park on Monday, May 5 after nearly eight months of closure due to hurricane damage.
Nestled at the southern tip of Gasparilla Island, the Port Boca Grande Lighthouse, originally built in 1890, has withstood the test of time and nature. Following months of restoration and safety enhancements, the museum is once again ready to welcome guests and share the rich maritime history of the region.

“We are thrilled to open the doors of the Port Boca Grande Lighthouse and Museum once again,” said Sharon McKenzie, Executive Director of BIPS. “This lighthouse is not only a treasured historic site, but also a symbol of resilience and community spirit. We invite everyone to join us in celebrating its return.”
Guests will enjoy access to the fully restored museum exhibits, educational displays, the breathtaking views from the surrounding park, and explore the museum gift shop for one- of-a-kind merchandise. The Port Boca Grande Lighthouse and Museum will resume regular operating hours following the reopening celebration at 11 a.m.
Last week, the Dune parking area at the Gasparilla Island State Park on the south end was reopened; however, the park is in the process of beach renourishment and dunes are also roped off to protect vegetation.
