This week, Lee County contractors began the process of repairing roads across Gasparilla Island as part of repairs from recent hurricanes.

The $4.5 million project, which will take approximately three months, will repair county roadways as well as cleaning and repair of the stormwater drainage.

“Work has commenced for the emergency road repairs on the island’s local roads,” said Lee County DOT Director Rob Price. “The process started with a review of the damaged areas and then moving equipment to the island to bring in materials. The project is moving along as anticipated.”

Already, crews have been here cleaning drains, and this week, crews were out surveying and preparing side streets. In anticipation of cleanup on side streets, crews from Crowder Gulf have been clearing storm debris; some streets are impassible for the larger trash trucks brought in by the contractor.

The county will be using their Wheeler Road area as a staging area for equipment and material. Only county roadway and drainage facilities will be repaired under the contract. Private road and driveway repairs remain the responsibility of the property owner.

“We thank the residents of Boca Grande for their patience as we work to repair island roads,” said Price.
