Want to help our feral cats? Give R.P . a call

To the Editor:
My name is R.P. Warner, I am a volunteer as a Lighthouse Ambassador and a docent in Boca Grande. I’m concerned about recent reports that that I am hearing of a growing feral cat population – especially around some of the dumpsters. I am a retired cat behaviorist and have worked at the Out Of Africa Wildlife Park in Fountain Hills, Arizona in various capacities for several years.
Now I am currently volunteering at the Big Cat Rescue Center in Sarasota. Let’s face it: Our feral cats and indigenous wildlife are literally a captive audience! Our wild birds and baby turtles are easy prey.
Don’t get me wrong, I have always loved cats of all sizes and shapes but I am also aware that growing feral cat populations are a real threat to our delicate ecosystems on the island (there are some reports already on line suggesting that Irma may have already wiped out as much as a quarter of of the total population of nesting sea turtles).
