FIVE YEARS AGO

Hurricane Irma came and went, leaving many trees down but few homes damaged. Power was out for some time, though. 

Wini Smart left us at the age of 85. 

TEN YEARS AGO

There was some major landscaping renovation going on at Coral Creek Airport, and numerous swing bridge builders gathered to throw their hat in the ring.

FIFTEEN YEARS AGO

 Boca Grande Fire Chief Dave Edmonds, who had announced the past August that he would retire, decided he would stay a bit longer in order to complete his 10 years with the department.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

Construction crews were paving the Bicycle Path just north of the Lee County line. The Lee County portion of the Path south of 1st Street was paved the month before.  

TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO

The owners of Three Sisters Island applied to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for a permit to build a 13-slip dock in a designated “critical habitat” for the Florida manatee.

Sue Hoots of Courtyard Hair fame helped to make a new home for causeway ospreys whose platform rotted away. She went through the red tape with the government to make it happen.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

Seven Boca Grande firefighters spent many days in Miami helping to clean up after Hurricane Andrew came though. The owners of the Waterfront Motel-Boatel said that, contrary to rumors and financial hardships, they would continue to stay open. 

THIRTY-FIVE YEARS AGO

Punta Gorda Attorney Michael Haymans was hired by 10 property owners who were fighting the state entities that wanted to tear down their fish shacks, which stood in the waters of Bull and Turtle Bay.
