FIVE YEARS AGO

The lady who couldn’t make up her mind decided Boca Grande wasn’t for her. Hurricane Irma played tag with Southwest Florida for 11 days before she finally came through the state, but pretty much missed the island.

TEN YEARS AGO

Many local guides and fishermen went to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission meeting in Tampa to give their opinion on how our fisheries could be made more stable, and that included methods of tarpon preservation. 

FIFTEEN YEARS AGO

 The Community Center got a climbing wall at the playground and it was awesome. It’s gone now. 

TWENTY YEARS AGO

Plans for The Island School to be located on the grounds of the Boca Grande Community Center were endorsed by the Boca Grande Area Chamber of Commerce. 

TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO

Charlotte County commissioners were being urged by residents in Rotonda to amend the county’s code to prohibit recreational shooters, campers and four-wheelers in their neighborhood, after bullet holes were found in exterior walls of homes, cars and pool cages.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

The Boca Grande Fishing Guides Association elected Babe Darna as their president; Cappy Joiner as vice president; and Jon Zorian as their secretary.

Meanwhile, Janet Italiano, Stephanie Wheeler, Sue Spurgeon and Bunny Amory were performing karaoke to “Stop in the Name of Love.” Heather Hargis and Deb Baker were grooving to “Purple People Eater.”

THIRTY-FIVE YEARS AGO

The big FP&L oil tanks that were located where Hill Tide Estates is now were found to be leaking.
