FIVE YEARS AGO

The community was urged to voice their opinion regarding proposals to nominate a section of the historic district to the National Register of Historic Places in concern to the impact on parking and public sanitation issues.

TEN YEARS AGO

The Gasparilla Island Conservation and Improvement Association (GICIA) successfully purchased the Mercabo 30-acre tract at the entrance to the Boca Grande Causeway.

FIFTEEN YEARS AGO

Local Girl Scouts Anne LeVasseur and Hannah Amen were selling cookies in town by Hudson’s and in front of the post office.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

The GICIA celebrated its 35th anniversary of the association. 

TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO 

Beach renourishment plans were being presented by Lee County to property owners on the island. GICIA was strongly in favor of the project.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

Five boats were stolen from Little Gasparilla Island in one night with their mooring lines cut. 

THIRTY-FIVE YEARS AGO

The Jug Creek cottages in Bokeelia on the north tip of Pine Island were purchased by the Florida Park Service as a mainland rental camp for state park visitors.

FORTY YEARS AGO

The Boca Grande Club held its annual fashion show. About 130 residents watched their neighbors model the latest clothing lines from Fugate’s Patio Shop.

FORTY-FIVE YEARS AGO

The Boca Beacon celebrated its one-year anniversary. The Beacon had a staff of two with multiple contributing writers.
